Training and Capacity Building Related to the Recognition of Asbestos Related Diseases (Diagnosis, Surveillance & Registration of Mesothelioma Cases) was originally planned for 9-11 March 2020 in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop will be hosted by the Pollution Control Department (PCD), Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Bangkok, sponsored by the UN Environment Program/Secretariat of The Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (UNEP-BRS) and hosted by The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) in collaboration with The World Health Organization (WHO-SEARO). Organizing workshops in collaboration with BCRC-SEA & SCRC Indonesia.

This workshop is part of the collaboration between UNEP and BCRC-SEA & SCRC Indonesia to organize and facilitate 2 (two) workshops on “Training and capacity building related to the recognition of asbestos-related diseases (diagnosis, surveillance and registration of mesothelioma cases)” in Philippines and Thailand. The first workshop in the Philippines was held on 10-12 July 2019 at the Seda Vertis Hotel, Quezon City.

The aim of this activity is to increase awareness of the health hazards of asbestos and asbestos related diseases (ARDs) in Thailand by increasing the detection and registration (diagnosis and surveillance) of ARDs, especially mesothelioma, through education, training and capacity building:

  • To train doctors in health clinics and doctors in the workplace, including investigations of employment history and use of the Occupational Exposure Matrix;
  • To facilitate increased diagnostic capacity of clinical specialists through reading of chest X-ray films (ILO Classification of Pneumoconiosis) and CT films;
  • To facilitate capacity building of pathologists, including immunohistochemical and histopathological staining techniques;
  • To improve case reporting, coding and registration (training of doctors, hospital registrars, and cancer registries);
  • To raise awareness of the ILO Convention (162) and Recommendation (172) on Asbestos.
