The training was held in Quezon City, Philippines, on 10-12 July 2019 at the Seda Vertis Hotel, Quezon City. The workshop was organized by BCRC-SEA & SCRC Indonesia together with the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention Secretariat (BRS) in collaboration with the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), ILO and WH, hosted by the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB) -DENR) Philippines.

The aim of this activity is to increase awareness of the health hazards of asbestos and asbestos related diseases (ARDs) in the Philippines by increasing the detection and registration (diagnosis and surveillance) of ARDs, especially mesothelioma, through education, training and capacity building:

  • To train doctors in health clinics and doctors in the workplace, including investigations of employment history and use of the Occupational Exposure Matrix;
  • To facilitate increased diagnostic capacity of clinical specialists through reading of chest X-ray films (ILO Classification of Pneumoconiosis) and CT films;
  • To facilitate capacity building of pathologists, including immunohistochemical and histopathological staining techniques;
  • To improve case reporting, coding and registration (training of doctors, hospital registrars, and cancer registries);
  • To raise awareness of the ILO Convention (162) and Recommendation (172) on Asbestos.
