๐ HARRIS Hotel & Conventions Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, Indonesia, with a site visit to PT Inocycle Technology Group Tbk, Tangerang, Banten
๐ค Organised by BSCRC-SEA in partnership with the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions, under the Basel Convention Partnership on Plastic Waste (PWP)
Plastic pollution is one of todayโs most pressing environmental challenges. In 2019, Parties to the Basel Convention adopted the Plastic Waste Amendments, bringing most plastic waste under the Conventionโs control system for transboundary movements. The amendments also encourage countries to manage plastic waste in an environmentally sound way.
To support this, BSCRC-SEA and the BRS Secretariat have been implementing the project Optimisation of Domestic Plastic Waste Utilisation in five countries: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. The project has produced national plastic waste inventories, assessments of how plastic waste is used domestically, country-specific recommendations, and case studies, all developed using a harmonised methodology.
As the project entered its final phase, BSCRC-SEA brought the participating countries together in Jakarta to share results and plan the way forward. Over two days of sessions, country representatives presented their plastic waste inventories, national strategies for optimising domestic plastic waste utilisation and reducing transboundary movements, and lessons learned from their case studies. Participants also discussed how to strengthen regional cooperation, including preventing illegal transboundary movements of plastic waste. Contributions came from the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia, the ASEAN Secretariat, GIZ and the recycling industry.
On the third day, participants visited the recycling facilities of PT Inocycle Technology Group Tbk to see practical approaches to plastic waste recycling and exchange experiences directly with industry.
The meeting brought together representatives of environment ministries, Basel Convention Focal Points, project consultants, the BRS Secretariat, BSCRC-SEA, the recycling industry, academia and regional organisations. Its outcomes will help validate the projectโs findings, shape regional recommendations, and finalise the project reports and knowledge products for wider regional and global dissemination.
