Indonesia is selected to host one of BCRCs according to the the Decision III/19 at Conference of the Parties (COP) III in 1995. The Government of the Republic of Indonesia then signed the Framework Agreement on BCRC for Southeast Asia (BCRC-SEA) with the Secretariat of the Basel Convention (SBC) on 29 October 2004 in Geneve. The Framework Agreement was later endorsed by Presidential Regulation No. 60/2005 on 12 October 2005.
Since 1997 – 2005, BCRC for Southeast Asia has been under the directorship of Ms. Sulistyowati. Following Ministry Decree No. 352 year 2005, BCRC-SEA has been reestablished with the appointment of a new full-time director, Aboejoewono Aboeprajitno, since, effectively, January 2006.
Besides as a host for the BCRC-SEA, Indonesia has also been host for meetings, workshops and projects organized by BCRC-SEA under the Basel Convention. Currently, The National Focal Point for Basel Convention in Indonesia is Deputy Minister for Hazardous and Toxic Substances and Waste Management, Ministry of Environment of Indonesia.
